The following activities come from what many consider to be the bible of word study, Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction by Donald Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, Shane Templeton, and Francine Johnston. 4th Grade Spelling Unit D-21 Silent consonants is the topic for Spelling Unit D-21. List: muscle, answer, whistle, plumber, column, mortgage, soften, castle, ballet, subtle, cupboard, handsome, autumn, debris, wrestle, acquire, knowledge, salmon, yolk, buffet, gourmet, and raspberry.
Research studies clearly indicate that memorization of lists of 'spelling words' does not promote the development of spelling skills. In the past when we’ve used this traditional approach of 'everyone gets the same weekly list and test on Friday', many students who got a 100% on their spelling test could not spell most of the words in their writing! Memorizing a list of words and getting 100% on weekly tests does not necessarily mean your child is a good speller. It may just mean they are good at memorizing words for a test.The fourth grade spelling words curriculum below spans 36 weeks and includes a master spelling list and five different printable spelling activities per week to help support learning. 4th Grade Dictation Sentences are now included in each week’s activity set: The teacher/parent will read each sentence aloud and the student will write each sentence on the provided worksheet. This helps ensure that students are making the connection between the spelling words and how they are used in context. It also allows you to check and correct problems with language conventions such as capitalization and punctuation.
